Unwanted Advice In Public

Temper Tantrum

Temper Tantrum

Maria Jeffs
Don't you just love when you get unwanted parenting advice in public?

Now no matter how well behaved your kids are, there is going to come a time when they will have a little meltdown in a public place. And even the best skilled parent likely won't be able to stop it by simply snapping their fingers every time, which will leave you wide open to advice from every parenting expert around you.

So you might hear:

  • You should put her in time-out.
  • I would never let MY kids talk like that.
  • Don't you think that you are spoiling your kids too much?
  • You know, it isn't a good idea to give in to everything your kids want.
The funny (or really the sad thing) is that most of these people don't have a clue what to do in these situations. Personally, I would only intervene if I thought that the parents were really at the end of their rope and/or might harm their children. Even then, it might be best to try and distract the kids or say something like 'you know, my kids do the same thing.' You can then talk about how it can be overwhelming to take care of kids and that there are resources where they might get more help with their kids.

So what do I do in this situation? It has only come up once (the part where someone said something. With twin toddlers, the tantrums in public happen all of the time...) and I just smiled and walked away. If I could think a little more quickly on my feet, I might have said, 'thanks, but we already called Nanny 911.'
