Step 3 - Practice your fire escape plan with Home Fire Drills at least twice a year.

So you have working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan for your family...

Is that enough?

No. Now you have to practice your fire escape plan. In a real fire, with smoke, fire, alarms, it is very easy for family members, especially children, to get confused about how to get out. Regular home fire drills can help to make sure that everyone is prepared to escape a fire.

Although it is important to be realistic, you don't want to scare your children, so you should likely give them some advance warning about the drill.

And even if everyone understands the fire escape plan, do they really know 'how' to get out, such as crawling on their hands and knees to avoid smoke? Family members should also know to 'test' doors for heat before opening them and close doors behind them to help slow the fire as it spreads.
