The Utah Department of Health issued a news report a few weeks ago stating that "The total number of confirmed measles cases in Utah has grown to 15, with known infected individuals from Cache County in the north to Millard County in Central Utah."
Fortunately, they said, "all 15 cases are no longer contagious."
Surprisingly, six weeks after the first case was reported in Cache County, and a little over four weeks after the outbreak expanded, there is another case of measles. Since that is a little bit out of the typical incubation period of measles, which is about 7 to 18 days, that can mean that there have been undiagnosed cases in the community. Either that, or the child was exposed to a new case of measles that isn't associated with the previous outbreak.
Either way, as the measles outbreaks continue, with over 174 cases in the United States and 16 in Utah alone, it is a good reminder to get your kids vaccinated.
Getting fully protected against measles is especially important if you plan on traveling overseas.
