Dog Allergies and Hypoallergenic Dogs

Monday November 10, 2008

Chinese Crested Dog - Photo by Ljupco SmokovskiWhen kids ask for a dog, a lot of thought has to go into making sure your family and child is ready for a pet.

Don't forget to consider your child's allergies and whether or not he has asthma though, in addition to if he is responsible enough to take care of a pet. If your child does have allergies and you can't get away from getting a dog, you might consider getting a hypoallergenic dog.

Although not truly 'allergy free', these dog breeds, such as the Chinese Crested dog, Portuguese Water dog, and Poodles, shed less dander and may be less likely to trigger allergy and asthma symptoms than other dogs.

Actually any Spitz breed will be alright for the family. As someone who has lived with asthma all my life, when I decided in 2000 that I had lived with out dogs for to long, I decided to research Hypoallergenic dogs. I found any spitz to be a great dog for people with allergies.

Personally I went with the keeshound, a great playful 40 pound dog. Since Mr. Obama said he wanted a nice size dog, and I think my Byron is just the right size. Not that they can have my Byron, but a Kees would be a great first dog.
