Salmonella Outbreak Update

Thursday July 10, 2008

Image Courtesy of the CDCSurprisingly, the Salmonella outbreak that began in April and was presumed linked to tomatoes is still continuing today. The outbreak has now spread to 1017 people in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada.

In addition to certain types of raw tomatoes, the Salmonella outbreak is now thought to possibly also be linked to raw jalapeņo peppers and raw serrano peppers. So adding to raw tomatoes that aren't on the FDA safe list, high risk people, including infants and children with immune system problems, shouldn't eat raw jalapeņo peppers or raw serrano peppers, which are often used in fresh salsa, pico de gallo, and some other dishes.

Are people getting sick from Salmonella in this outbreak? It is hard to say, as people getting sick now may have been exposed two or three weeks ago.

It is also surprising that there doesn't seem to be as much hype about this outbreak as there was with the recent peanut butter outbreak (628 infections) or Veggie Booty recall (65 infections).
