Q. Our daughter is thinking of relocating from here near Colorado Springs, Colorado to Groves, Texas (which is near Beaumont, TX). Her daughter (which is 6 years old) has chronic sinus problems and we are wondering if the move will be beneficial for her sinus condition or not. Please let us know as soon as possible, as we are anxious to find out what we can do do relieve her sinus problems. Peyton, Peyton, CO

A. It is hard to say. If her sinus problems are caused by allergies and she is leaving behind what ever is triggering her allergies, then she should be better. On the other hand, if she is allergic to some common things, like mold, dust mites, or ragweed, then you might not notice a difference.

Also keep in mind that six Texas cities, including the Houston-Galveston-Brazoria region, which isn't too far from Beaumont, are on the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's 2004 Fall Allergy Capitals. Colorado Springs is on that list too though.

And if her sinus problems have nothing to do with allergies, then the move will probably have no effect on how often she has sinus infections.

So what can you do? If she has never had allergy testing, that may be a good place to start. This might help her to avoid whatever she is allergic to, whether it is dust mites, cats, pollen, or mold.

It might also help to see a Pediatric Allergist once she gets settled in her new home. In addition to allergy testing, an allergist can prescribe preventative allergy medicines, such as Zyrtec, Claritin, or Clarinex, and/or a steroid nasal spray, like Flonase or Nasonex. They can also look into whatever else might help prevent and treat her sinus problems.
