Q. My 1 year old son has a spot on the top of his bottom. It looks like a bruise and has been there since birth. His doctor said that it was called a Mongolian Spot. She said that is very rare in white children (it is common in African American children) and that she had to record that so it would not be thought of as abuse. I can not find anything about it. Is this the true term or could she have misdiagnosed my son? I am very curious about this spot. Elizabeth, Festus, MO

A. Mongolian spots are flat blue or gray birthmarks on a newborn's body. Although most commonly located on a baby's lower back and buttocks, they can also occur on other areas of their body.

Although they can look like bruises, they are normal and not a sign of child abuse or any other condition. They often fade as a child gets older.

They are much more common in dark skinned races, especially African, Asian, East Indian, and Hispanics, but can also occur in up to about 9 percent of Caucasian children.
