Infants should be placed in a rear facing car seat in the back seat of the car until they are 12 months old AND they weigh at least 20 pounds.

If you have a larger baby who reaches 20 pounds before their first birthday and they outgrow an infant only or infant carrier car seat, then you should get a convertible car seat. The AAP says that they 'are ideal for bigger babies.' These seats can be used in the rear facing position until your heavier infant is 30 to 35 pounds (depending on the seat and manufacturer).

Convertible seats have the added benefit that they can also be used in the forward facing position for your toddler.
