Definition: GBS is an abbreviation for the Group B streptococcus bacteria, which according to the CDC 'is the most common cause of life-threatening infections in newborns.'

The CDC also states that 'most early-onset group B strep disease in newborns can be prevented by giving pregnant women antibiotics (medicine) through the vein (IV) during labor,' after screening pregnant women for Group B strep infections late in pregnancy and following the latest CDC Group B strep guidelines about GBS prevention.

Examples:
I tested positive for the GBS bacteria late in my pregnancy and had to get antibiotics before my baby was born to prevent him from getting a serious Group B strep infection.
