In this week's Saturday Safety Roundup, stories of:
- a 7-year-old in Moreno Valley, California who is in critical condition with major head trauma after she slammed into the side of a moving pickup truck while riding a scooter. She was not wearing a helmet and had entered an intersection of the street.
- a 15-year-old in Chicago, Illinois who died after she fell from the 8th floor of a building onto a parking garage four stories below.
- a 3-year-old in Lincoln, Nebraska who was hospitalized after he fell out of a third story window in his apartment. His mother had just put him down for a nap, when he must have climbed on some furniture and pushed through the screen of an open window. He was found crying on the ground below by a postal worker.
- a 15-year-old in Chula Vista, California who died after he imitated what he saw in online clips of the "pass-out game," lost consciousness, and fell on to a large glass tumbler, slashing his throat.
- a 16-year-old Boy Scout at Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina who died after he fell about 500 feet while hiking near the top of the 600-foot summit of Stone Mountain.
- a 16-year-old in Chillicothe, Ohio who died while car surfing (riding on the hood of a car) in a Walmart parking lot. He fell off the car and hit his head, causing severe head injuries.
- a 3-month-old in Burleson, Texas who died after being mauled by the family's pit bull mix.
- a 12-year-old in Las Cruces, New Mexico who was hospitalized after being attacked by five German shepherds and being bitten more than 50 times while walking home from a friend's house.
- a 6-month-old in Doral, Florida who died after being left in a hot car as her father forgot her in the car after dropping off another child at school.
- a 3-year-old in Monroe County, Michigan who suffered severe burns on his legs and face that he got after he set something on fire inside a closet using a lighter he got out of his mother's purse while she was sleeping.
- an 11-year-old in Opelika, Alabama who died in a house fire from which two of his siblings were able to escape.
- a 3-year-old in Elk Lick Township, Pennsylvania who died after he fell off a tractor. He had been sitting on the tractor by himself, when he started the tractor, fell off, and was then run over by the tractor. Another child that was struck by the unmanned tractor suffered minor injuries.
- a 6-year-old who drowned near the Sandy Beach swimming area at Lake O' the Pines in Texas. After he was found in the water after being missing for 20 minutes, he was taken to a hospital in Shreveport, where he was taken off life support the next day.
- an 8-month-old in Chicago, Illinois who drowned in a bathtub (his mother found him a bathtub full of water floating faceup with his eyes open) with his 2-year-old brother. They had been in the care of their father who had left them alone for 10 minutes while he went to smoke a cigarette in another room.
- a 2-year-old in Cocoa Beach, Florida who drowned in a canal behind his home. He was found floating in the canal by this father.
- a 16-year-old in Eveleth, Minnesota who was shot in the knee by his brother while they were duck hunting. The boys stood up in their canoe as ducks flew overhead, but as the canoe rolled and took on water, one of the boys fell backward and his shotgun went off as he tried to catch himself.
- a 15-year-old in New Fairfield, Connecticut who died after he was shot by his father, thinking he was an intruder, as the boy was found outside his aunt's house with a knife and wearing a black ski mask, in what was perhaps some type of Halloween prank gone wrong. He was playing Minecraft online with a friend shortly before the incident occurred.
- a 12-year-old near Redmond, Washington who unintentionally strangled himself on a zip line at his home. His mother found him hanging from the zip line when she went looking for him - she had thought he was riding his bike.
- a 3-year-old in San Antonio, Texas who died when grandfather backed over him in his SUV in the family's driveway. The toddler had gotten out of the house without his parent's knowing.
Keep your kids safe. Not all, but many of these types of accidents can be prevented.
Many of the accidents and tragedies are ones that we see week after week, especially drownings, falls, ATV accidents, accidental shootings, and even lawn mower accidents.
