In this week's Saturday Safety Roundup, stories of:

  • a 4-year-old in Las Cruces, New Mexico who was mauled by her father's Blue Heeler (an Australian cattle dog).
  • a 10-month-old in Hertford, North Carolina who was mauled to death by his grandparent's pit bull-mix, while his grandmother watched him play with the dog on a bed.
  • a 2-year-old in Sebring, Florida who died after being left in a hot car by her father, possibly forgotten in the car outside their home after a trip to the store to get a lighter.
  • a 12-year-old in River Falls, Wisconsin who was seriously injured when he was hit by a school bus while crossing the street against a 'do not walk' signal. The rear wheels of the bus ran over his legs.
  • a 16-year-old in Lakeland, Florida who died after he was struck by lightning when he went to cover his dirt bike, which he kept under an oak tree, to keep it from getting wet while it was raining.
  • a 15-month-old in D'Iberville, Mississippi who suffered severe burns to half her body from scalding water.
  • a 19-month-old in Wasilla, Alaska who died after she was strangled in a little window of some playground equipment. She was standing on a toy to reach the window, stuck her head in, then slipped off the toy.
  • a 4-year-old in Mercedes, Texas who was unintentionally shot in the eye with a pellet rifle by her 8-year-0ld cousin.
  • a 2-year-old, the son of a local police officer, in Springville, Utah who died after he unintentionally shot himself with a handgun that 'was just sitting there,' although it was not his father's service weapon.
  • an 11-year-old in Weld County, Colorado who died after he was shot by his 18-year-old brother, reportedly while they struggled with each other over the gun.
  • a 6-year-old in Florence, Alabama who died after falling from a tractor mower at her home. She was riding on the mower with her mother when she fell off the back of the tractor and was run over by an attachment being pulled by the tractor.
  • a 7-year-old in Richmond, Indiana who suffered serious injuries to his leg after being run over by a lawn mover his father was driving.
  • a 21-month-old in Nashville, Tennessee who died after falling out of the front seat of her father's pickup truck and getting run over.
  • a 5-year-old in Altamonte Springs, Florida who is in critical condition after falling off a 10-foot diving board at a local aquatics program where he was learning to dive.
  • a 4-year-old in Barrow County, Georgia who died after falling out of the back of his father's work truck and getting run over.
  • a 10-year-old in Jefferson County, Mississippi who died after he fell off an ATV she was riding on with a friend and her sister.
  • an 18-month-old in Modesto, California who drowned in an above-ground pool in her family's backyard.
  • a 1-year-old in Rowan County, North Carolina who drowned in his neighbor's cement yard fountain after he had gone missing from his own home.
  • a 3-year-old in Caldwell, Idaho who drowned in a creek he was playing in with his mother and an older sibling. The current had swept them all down the creek and he never resurfaced among the debris of the creek, despite wearing a lifevest.
  • a 2-year-old in Whittier, Iowa who drowned in his family's swimming pool.
  • a 17-year-old in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia who drowned in a pond while visiting the area with his family.
  • a 2-year-old in El Cajon, California who drowned in a relative's swimming pool. All of the adults that were there had gotten out of the pool and had gone inside the house, while the kids had stayed outside to play in the backyard.
  • a 3-year-old in Stoughton, Massachusetts who died after getting hit by a box truck while crossing the street with her mother  near a school. They were not in a designated crosswalk, even though it was nearby.
  • a 3-year-old in Leesburg, Virginia who died after falling from a third-story window in his home after he had pushed through a screen.

Keep your kids safe. Not all, but many of these types of accidents can be prevented.

Many of the accidents and tragedies are ones that we see week after week, especially drownings, falls, ATV accidents, accidental shootings, and even lawn mower accidents.

Spread the word about child safety to help save lives and reduce these types of accidents and tragedies.
