In this week's Saturday Safety Roundup, stories of:
- a 4-year-old in Seminole County, Georgia who was mauled to death by a dog after the boy had wandered outside his home.
- an 8-year-old in Huntington, West Virginia who has been hospitalized after being attacked by a large dog in her friend's yard.
- a 1-year-old in Durham, Maine who was injured while riding on an ATV in her car seat when a strap wrapped around her neck and caught under the rear tire of the ATV.
- a 13-year-old in St. Anthony, Idaho who died when the ATV he was riding on during a family outing tipped into some rocks. He was wearing a helmet.
- a 17-year-old from LaFollette, Tennessee whodied after spending a month in the ICU of injuries he suffered in a mid-August ATV accident.
- a 10-year-old in Middle Inlet, Wisconsin who died after the ATV he was driving crashed into the side of a pickup truck.
- a 16-year-old in Paynesville, South Carolina who died when his ATV rolled as he tried to make a turn in a pasture.
- a 4-year-old from the Town of Lockport, New York who is in the ICU with severe head injuries after falling out of the second-floor window.
- a 7-year-old from Paris, Tennessee who was critically injured after falling from as high as five stories from the inn at Paris Landing State Park. He apparently climbed over his room's balcony rail and was trying to climb down using the grooves in the walls of the inn to hold on.
- a 2-year-old in Hartford, Connecticut who suffered a skull fracture after he fell from the third-story roof of his home. He got out of an open window as his babysitter took a nap.
- a 2-year-old in Phoenix, Arizona who is in critical condition after falling out of a screened second-floor window while jumping on a bunk bed.
- a 13-year-old in Jackson County, Georgia who was shot in the ankle while dove hunting.
- a 2-year-old in Hampton, Virginia who died after he suffered a gun shot to his head while paying in the closet of his parent's bedroom. It is unclear if he unintentionally shot himself or if one of his siblings was handling a gun.
- a 10-year-old in Mason County, Michigan who was airlifted to a hospital after she was unintentionally shot in the head with an air pellet rifle.
- a 10-year-old in Jacksonville, Florida who died after being strangled by a rope swing on a middle school playground while his older brother was at football practice.
- a 13-year-old in Plain City, Utah who was saved by a utility worker who performed CPR on the boy after he was hit by lightning while hunting during a severe thunderstorm.
- a 2-year-old from Falcon Heights, Minnesota who suffered burns after she was poked in the eye with a lit cigarette at the Minnesota State Fair. The toddler was walking away from a parade with her family when a women lowered her lit cigarette and swung it into the girl's eye.
- an 11-year-old in Lansing, Michigan who was airlifted to a burn unit with second-degree burns he received while playing with fire with friends.
- a 2-month-old in Chicago, Illinois who drowned during a bath as her mother left her unattended to make coffee.
- a 4-year-old in Beaverton, Oregon who drowned in a bathtub.
- a 6-year-old from Maryland who drowned at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia.
- a 5-year-old in Buckeye, Arizona who drowned in a backyard pool during a party.
- a 3-year-old in Mesa, Arizona who drowned in a backyard pool during a Labor Day party. Someone had removed her floaties while everyone eat and she slipped back into the pool without a personal floatation device.
- a 23-month-old in Tamarac, Florida who drowned in the shallow end of a pool as his parent's sat at the pool's edge nearby.
- a 16-month-old in San Antonio, Texas who drowned in a backyard pool while he was in the pool with other children.
- a 12-year-old in Conway, Arkansas who drowned as he was swept away by rushing water in a drainage ditch.
- a 2-year-old in Phoenix, Arizona who died after being run over by an SUV as a family member pulled out of their driveway.
- 3 children in Argyle, Wisconsin, ages 3, 5, and 7-years-old, who died in a middle of the night house fire. Their mother tried to call 911, but couldn't find a phone. Their father initially tried to fight the fire on his own and then couldn't get to the boys room once he realized how big the fire was.
Keep your kids safe. Not all, but many of these types of accidents can be prevented.
Many of the accidents and tragedies are ones that we see week after week, especially drownings, falls, ATV accidents, accidental shootings, and even lawn mower accidents.
