In this week's Saturday Safety Roundup are stories of:

  • a 10-year-old boy in Dix, Illinois who died after he was shot by his 7-year-old sister with a loaded gun she found in an RV that their grandfather used as a hunting cabin.
  • a 13-year-old in Reedsville, Wisconsin who died after he was shot by his 12-year-old friend while they were shooting blackbirds with a 20-guage shotgun, which accidentally discharged, hitting the 13-year-old in the upper torso.
  • an 8-year-old in Kieler, Wisconsin who died after she was accidentally shot.
  • an 11-year-old in Willards, Maryland who died after she was accidentally shot by her 13-year-old brother who was moving his .22-caliber rifle while cleaning his bedroom, when it accidentally fired.
  • a 4-year-old in Dale City, Virginia who died after he shot himself in the head with a gun he found in a family member's unlocked truck that was parked on the street.
  • a 2-year-old in Deland, Florida who shot himself in the finger with his father's gun.
  • a 4-year-old in Lakeland, Florida who was shot in the chest by his 10-year-old cousin with a BB gun. The BB is lodged in his heart.
  • a 12-year-old in Fairbanks, Alaska who died after he was accidentally shot in the head with a .40-caliber handgun by another 12-year-old boy.
  • a 6-year-old in Culloden, Georgia who died after she was shot by her 13-year-old brother when he accidentally knocked the .22-caliber rifle he had been using to hunt armadillos off a bed, causing it to discharge. They were from Connecticut, and were in Georgia visiting their grandmother.
  • a 3-year-old in Tulsa, Oklahoma who shot herself in the leg after she found a loaded handgun in her parent's bedroom.
  • a 2-year-old who fell into a fire pit at Dillon Beach in Marin County, California and suffered third degree burns.
  • two children, ages 8 and 9-years-old, who were seriously burned in a wood shed fire at New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The children may have been playing with a lighter when the fire started.
  • a 10-year-old in Fredricksburg, Virginia who lost part of his leg when his foot slipped underneath a running lawn mower.
  • a 3-year-old from Bloomingdale, New Jersey who lost most of his foot in a lawn mower accident while visiting his grandparents in Poland.
  • a 17-year-old in Texas who was electrocuted while trying to jumpstart a lawn mower
  • a 10-year-old in Benson, Vermont who died when the lawn mower he was using rolled down an embankment and he got trapped underneath.
  • a 2-month-old in Texas who died after her mother accidentally left her in a hot car. She had been running errands to prepare for another child's baptism and forgot the baby in the car when she got home.
  • a 4-year-old in Jasper County, Missouri who is on life support after being attacked by his neighbor's pit bull.
  • a 5-year-old in Effingham, Georgia who required surgery and was in the intensive care unit after being attacked by a pit bull while playing in another child's home.
  • a 12-year-old in Claremont, South Dakota who died when he lost control of his ATV and he got pinned underneath.
  • a 15-year-old in East Windsor, Connecticut who died in an ATV accident.
  • a 2-year-old in Warsaw, Missouri who was seriously injured when the ATV she was riding on with a 32-year-old driver struck a tree.
  • a 5-year-old from International Falls, Minnesota who died when the ATV she was riding on flipped over.
  • a 4-year-old in Roswell, New Mexico who died when the ATV her 8-year-old sister was driving flipped over.
  • a 10-year-old in Leavenworth, Kansas who died when she became trapped under her ATV which had rolled into a pond next to the path she was riding on.
  • a 3-year-old in Milwaukee who suffered life-threatening injuries in a fall from a second-story window in his home. He had climbed onto a couch that was positioned against a window and pushed against the screen of an open window.
  • a 2-year-old in Pasco, Florida who drowned in a retention pond near the home where he and his mother where staying with friends.
  • a 1-year-old in Duluth, Minnesota who drowned in an inflatable pool during a family gathering.
  • a 9-year-old in Alabama who drowned in a pond behind her grandparent's house while saving her brother.
  • a 2-year-old in North Coventry, Pennsylvania who drowned in his family's above-ground swimming pool. He was found in the water by a 10-year-old sibling.
  • a 4-year-old who drowned in the Great Sacandaga Lake at the Northampton Beach state campground in New York.
  • a 7-year-old from Detroit, Michigan who drowned in an indoor hotel pool while at a birthday party with a lot of people in the pool.
  • an 11-year-old in Corcoran, Minnesota who drowned in a pond on a farm.
  • a 6-year-old with autism who wandered away from his home and drowned in a nearby fishing pond.
  • a 2-year-old in Brockton, Massachusetts who drowned in a neighbor's above ground swimming pool.
  • a 2-year-old in Union, Missouri who drowned in a neighbor's inflatable pool.
  • a 5-year-old from Chicago Heights, Indiana who drowned at West Beach on Lake Michigan while swimming with family members.
  • a 4-year-old from southern Indiana who drowned in a rural lake. He was reported missing earlier in the evening.
  • a 3-year-old in Dover, Pennsylvania who drowned in a backyard swimming pool while his parents were sleeping inside the house.
  • a 3-year-old in Topeka, Kansas who died after he became tangled in the frame of a backyard swing set at a day care run by his mother.
  • a 17-month-old in Corvallis, New York who died after being run over by a car her father was parking in the driveway while the toddler was playing in front of her house with other children.
  • a 2-year-old from Bayfield County, Wisconsin who died when she was ejected from her car in a rollover accident. She was not in a car seat. Three other children are in critical or serious condition and were also not restrained.

Keep your kids safe. Not all, but many of these types of accidents can be prevented.

Many of the accidents and tragedies are ones that we see week after week, especially drownings, falls, ATV accidents, accidental shootings, and even lawn mower accidents.

Spread the word about child safety to help save lives and reduce these types of accidents and tragedies.
