Bugs are definitely biting this summer. And crawling and stinging - making summer miserable for many kids.
Although the general advice to avoid bugs is that kids don't spend time outdoors during evening to early morning hours (dusk to dawn), when mosquitoes bite the most, that is a good time to be outside to beat the heat.
Don't let a fear of insect bites keep your kids inside though. A few simple steps can help protect your kids from bugs and most stinging insects, including that they:
- dress in thin, loose-fitting, long-sleeve clothing (offers double protection against the sun and bugs) that doesn't include bright colors
- avoid scented soaps and other things that might attract mosquitoes and other bugs
- apply an insect repellent to exposed skin
You should also work to control ants, mosquitoes, and other insects where your kids play.
