In this week's Saturday Safety Roundup, stories of:
- a 4-year-old boy in New Kensington, Pennsylvania who required surgery after he shot himself in his left eye with a small caliber handgun while visiting the home of his aunt
- a 3-year-old boy in Gilroy, California who shot and killed himself. His father is a San Jose police officer, but a privately owned semiautomatic pistol was used, not his father's service weapon.
- a 5-year-old in Billings, Montana who suffered life-threatening injuries after being unintentionally shot by his 8-year-old friend with a small caliber rifle at a dog park near their home.
- a 14-year-old in Columbus, Ohio who was unintentionally shot and killed by his 14-year-old friend with a handgun they had found at the boy's grandmother's house, where they had been staying.
- a 14-year-old from Saugus, Massachusetts who was seriously injured when his ATV rolled over.
- an 11-year-old from Royal Palm Beach, Florida who required reconstructive surgery after her upper lip and part of her nose was torn off after she was attacked by a Jack Russel terrier-English bulldog mix while at a sleep over at a friend's house.
- a 5-month-old in Manchester, New Hampshire who suffered severe burns after he fell from a diaper changing area into a washing machine filling with hot water.
- a 4-year-old in Park City, Utah who died after he was crushed by a 6-foot-tall tombstone at a cemetery.
- a 2-year-old from Peabody, Massachusetts who died after falling from the arms of the caregiver carrying her. The caregiver had just reached into her car to turn on the ignition when the car lurched forward, causing them both to fall.
- a 9-year-old in Kutztown, Pennsylvania who died after falling through an open, screened window on the third floor of an animal hospital after she lost her balance while playing with her siblings.
- a 3-month-old in Greenfield, Indiana who died after being left in a hot car for an extended period of time by her father, who forgot her in the car while visiting his own parents.
- a 16-month-old in Fishers, Indiana who had a heat-related seizure while rescuers got her out of a hot car while her mother was shopping nearby
- a 5-year-old in Azle, Texas who drowned while swimming with family members at Eagle Mountain Lake. It is thought that she may have slipped on a drop off into deeper water.
- an 8-year-old in Harlingen, Texas who drowned in an above-ground pool in his backyard after his father left him alone for a short time to go inside and get the boy a popsicle.
- a 5-year-old in Star, Idaho who drowned in a neighborhood pond. He had been visiting relatives in the area and had gone missing. He was later found in the pond.
- a 5-year-old in Hickory, Oregon who drowned in Lake Hickory during a cookout. He had been missing for 5 or 10 minutes and was found in the water.
- a 6-year-old in Golden Valley, Minnesota who drowned while attending a birthday party at Golden Valley Lake. Lifeguards were on duty and he was in the water with family members, but the it was an 'extremely busy' day at the lake.
- a 3-year-old in Windham, Hew Hampshire who drowned in the family's above-ground pool, which had a deck and a gate, but the gate was unlocked.
- a 7-year-old who drowned in the water off St. Pete Beach, Florida
- a 15-year-old girl from Cincinnati, Ohio who drowned during a rafting excursion on the Whitewater River in Franklin County, Indiana. She had been swimming in the river at the time.
- a 15-year-old who drowned on a family trip to Bull's Island in the Delaware River. He had crossed the river with two cousins over a pedestrian and had decided to swim back, but struggled in the water.
- a 2-year-old from Eden Prairie, Minnesota who drowned while playing unsupervised with other children in a pool at the family's vacation home in Land O'Lakes.
- a 16-year-old from Gallatin, New York died while riding his bicycle when he was struck by a car after turning on the street from a private road.
- two children, an 11-year-old and a 15-year-old, who suffered severe injuries, including one who has been declared brain dead, after they were run over by a Jet Ski while they were being pulled on an inner tube by a pontoon boat.
Keep your kids safe. Not all, but many of these types of accidents can be prevented.
Many of the accidents and tragedies are ones that we see week after week, especially drownings, falls, ATV accidents, accidental shootings, and even lawn mower accidents.
