This week's Saturday Safety Roundup includes stories of:
- a 14-year-old girl near Littlefield, Arizona who drowned when she was sucked into an undertow of a small underwater channel that leads to the downstream side of the Virgin River Dam. She had been swimming with friends.
- a 9-year-old in Fort Worth, Texas who died after she was shot as her father took a gun from a bag and it fired.
- a 6-year-old in Hopkins, Minnesota drowned in a country club pool at a birthday party with lifeguards on duty.
- a 17-year-old in Otter Tail, Minnesota who was seriously burned when some black powder he was playing with exploded.
- an 8-year-old in Lewisdale, Maryland who died when her mother accidentally ran over her and four other kids as she was backing out of the driveway.
- a 1-year-old on a farm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania who is in critical condition after being backed over by a forklift that was being driven by his 16-year-old brother.
- an 18-month-old in Worcester, Massachusetts who drowned when he wandered out the back door of the family's apartment and found his way to nearby Indian Lake, where he was found face down in the water.
- a 3-year-old in Bradley County, Tennessee who was accidentally shot in the head by a .45 caliber handgun while at her grandfather's house, a Tennessee Highway Patrolman, with her mother and 2-year-old cousin.
- a 5-year-old in Tulsa, Oklahoma who drowned while swimming with seven or either other kids in an apartment swimming pool.
- a 21-month-old in Esse Health, Missouri who died when she ran in between parked cars in a parking lot and into the path of a moving car. Her mother had just parked and set her down when she ran off.
- a 3-year-old in Kern County, California who was attacked by the family's pit bull, the biggest pit bull on the block, and had injuries so severe that he had to be airlifted to the hospital.
- an 11-year-old in Naples, Florida who died when the ATV she lost control of her ATV and it overturned. She was not wearing a helmet.
- a 7-year-old in Birmingham, Alabama who drowned in an apartment complex swimming pool. He had told his father he was going swimming.
- a 3-year-old in Greenfield, Indiana who died after being found hanging from a car window in the family's driveway. She apparently tried to climb into the car by climbing on a tricycle and going through a partially open window and got stuck.
- a 4-year-old in Portsmouth, Rhode Island who drowned in a backyard swimming pool.
- an 11-year-old in Clifton, Texas who died in ATV accident.
- a 3-year-old in Winslow Township, New Jersey who drowned in a backyard pool after she had gone missing about 45 minutes earlier.
- a 2-year-old in Charlston, South Carolina who died after he slipped out the back door of his house and was attack by one or more lab-shephard mix "yard" dogs that were fed by the child's uncle and stayed in the area behind their house.
- a 4-year-old in Mobile, Alabama who drowned in a pool during a family get-together.
- a 10-year-old near Dooms, Virginia who died when the ATV he was riding on slopped terrain overturned on top of him.
- a 3-year-old in Mesa, Arizona who drowned in a swimming pool after being left alone in backyard for a few minutes.
- a 4-year-old in Portland, Oregon who is in critical condition after he fell from the third story window of his home. He had climbed on a bed and pushed out the window screen of an open window.
- a 10-year-old in Bainbridge, New York who died after he fell off a parade float during a Memorial Day parade. He was sitting with members of his baseball team in a plastic chair on a flatbed trailer, which stopped and then lurched forward, causing him to fall out and hit his head on the pavement. He was also run over once the trailer started to move again.
- a 6-year-old in Los Angelas, California who drowned in her family's pool during a Memorial Day block party in front of the house.
- a 2-year-old in Fall River, Massachusetts who died after falling out of a third-floor window of her family's apartment after pushing out the screen of an open window.
- a 6-month-old in Glendale, Arizona who died after being found submerged in a bathtub. She had been left alone in the tub by her mother for an unknown amount of time.
- an 8-month-old in Lower Providence, Pennsylvania who suffered severe burns on her face, neck, chest, and back after a sibling removed popcorn from the microwave and hot popcorn butter spilled from the bag onto the infant.
Many of the accidents and tragedies are ones that we see week after week, including drownings, falls, ATV accidents, accidental shootings, and even lawn mower accidents.
