In last week's Saturday Safety Roundup, noting an increase in other warm season tragedies, specifically falls out of windows and drownings, I noted that the other tragedies that we start to see this time of year involve lawn mowers and kids being left in hot cars.
Unfortunately, the first accident involving a lawn mower had already happened. A 4-year-old was critically injured in New Fairview, Texas when he was run over as his grandfather was cutting the grass on a riding lawn mower. The preschooler was walking behind his grandfather, who didn't see him as he turned the mower.
He suffered serious serious injuries to his leg and stomach and reportedly may need to have his leg amputated.
He will likely not suffer alone though. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) estimates that about 17,000 children require care in the emergency room each year because of lawn mower accidents.
Help spread the word about lawn mower safety and how important it is to keep young kids inside when you mow the lawn and that you should never let a child ride on your lap while you use a ride-on mower.
