Raw oysters aren't on many lists of kid friendly foods, but some kids do eat oysters.
If your kids do, be sure that they don't eat any raw oysters that were harvested from "growing area 4" in Hood Canal in Washington from August 30 to September 19, as they have been linked to three confirmed and two possible cases of Vibrio parahaemolyticus illness.
Oysters harvested from the area have been recalled. They were shipped to 23 states, including Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Utah, and Washington, and to the countries of China, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Thailand.
If you recently purchased raw oysters, check with the store to see if they are from the Hood Canal growing area.
If you develop any symptoms of a Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection, which can include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea and you recently ate the recalled oysters, be sure to tell your doctor. Keep in mind that treatment with antibiotics is usually not necessary for most people with these types of Vibrio infections.
