As flu activity continues to increase, with widespread cases of the flu in 17 states, now is a good idea to make sure your family is prepared for flu season.
In addition to getting a flu vaccine, and no, it is not too late to get a flu shot, you can help avoid the flu and be well prepared for flu season by:
- watching for flu symptoms
- teaching your kids about proper hand washing techniques
- encouraging your kids to avoid frequently touching their eyes, nose, or mouth, so that they don't spread the flu virus or other germs
- avoiding other people who are obviously sick with the flu
Watching for flu symptoms is especially important if your child is under two to five years old or has a chronic medical condition, such as asthma, diabetes, or immune system problem, etc. These kids may need an antiviral flu medication, such as Tamiflu or Relenza, to help them get better a little quicker and have milder symptoms.
Recognizing flu symptoms early can also help you avoid spreading the flu to others, as you keep your child home until he is free of fever for at least twenty-four hours.
