Nap Nanny Recall

By , About.com Guide   July 26, 2010

Follow me on:

Nap Nanny Recall - Photo courtesy of the CPSCThe Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Baby Matters LLC is recalling 30,000 Nap Nanny portable baby recliners because of multiple instances of infants 'hanging or falling out over the side of the Nap Nanny despite most of the infants being placed in the harness.'

In two of the instances, including one death, the babies got caught between the Nap Nanny and the side of their crib.

The Nap Nanny was sold from January 2009 through July 2010 for about $130. Parents who have an original Nap Nanny, which was sold before August 15, 2009 and does not include 'Velcro straps inside the cover securing the cover to the foam base,' should stop using it and can get an '$80 coupon towards the purchase of a new Nap Nanny with free shipping.'

If you have a newer Nap Nanny that does have 'Velcro straps inside the cover, which attach the ring, securing it to the foam base,' you should stop using it until you view a new Nap Nanny instructional video and understand all instructions, warnings, and dangers, especially that you only use the Nap Nanny on the floor and not in a crib, playard, or other raised surface and that you secure all straps properly. There is no further recall or need for a replacement on these newer Nap Nannys.

Thank you so much for clarifying this issue. I own a new generation nap nanny ,and I love it. I did email the nap nanny people ,and informed them about this as soon as I heard. They too claim the new generation ,or 2nd generation as they called it, was not recalled. However, I agree that one should read the owner’s/instruction manual prior to use! Thanks again :)

We got it and have not use it yet. It’s poorly designed and too dangerous to use with our baby especially after this recall so we will not be taking the chance with our baby. However it will make a great bed sitter for our pug’ blacky Chan!

I have the first generation nap nanny I am extremely disappointed that the company will not replace it even though I was instructed by the CPSC to stop using it right away. All I was offered was a coupon towards a new one. This is bad business! They’re not getting any more of my money.

To ‘nh’: Yes, it is not supposed to be used inside the crib. However, just because the product may have warnings in the instructions, and even tags on the outside of the product that a person can’t miss before installing it, that doesn’t mean that the company can’t or won’t be sued by people who don’t know how to read instructions for the safety and well-being of their children.

I love the napnanny. However, giving a coupon for 1/2 the price of a new one is bad business! This means the less wealthy will continue to use the first generation napnanny. Bad Business choice!!! CBP

I bought Nap Nanny for my newborn baby with reflux. After 3 weeks of using it my baby developed torticollis and subsequently flat head.

This product does not support the neck of the baby properly and should not be used for infants. It is taking months now to correct torticollis on top of treating reflux.

I have contacted the company about the issue but was completely ignored.

I would strongly advised against buying this product.
