Vaccine Shortage Update

Saturday June 27, 2009

It can be frustrating, both for pediatricians and parents, when a vaccine that a child is scheduled to receive is unavailable. In addition to not being fully protected against a vaccine preventable infection, missing a vaccine because of a shortage likely means another visit to the doctor later to get caught up.

Unfortunately, there have been several vaccine shortages the last few years, the most recent of which was the shortage of the Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) vaccine that lead vaccine experts to recommend that toddlers delay getting their Hib booster shot.

As supply of the Hib vaccine has now improved, vaccine experts at the CDC are now recommending that toddlers can start getting their Hib booster again (usually when they are 12 to 15 months old). Any children who missed their Hib booster can get it at their next visit to their pediatrician.
