Counseling Awareness Month

By , About.com GuideApril 4, 2009

Follow me on:

April is Counseling Awareness Month and is a great time to learn more about the different types of counseling that is available to kids who need help.

When kids have a mental health problem, whether it is depression, anxiety, or a behavioral problem, counseling from a Licensed Professional Counselor, Psychologist, or even a Psychiatrist, can be helpful.

Remember that counseling, whether it is tried alone, or is combined with medication, is often an important part of treating most mental health problems.

I am so offended by this piece on counseling! Why on earth would you exclude marriage and family therapists from your list of professionals! In California therapists with children are predominantly MFTs, LCSWs and psychologists. I know that in other states there are also LPCs, however there are thousands of MFTs throughout the U.S. and as a child therapist myself, I am baffled as to why our profession should be excluded from your listing and recommendations. Since much of what goes on with children takes place in the context of their relationships, relationships play an important role in child therapy, whether or not family members are present in sessions (and with younger children they mostly are unless there is a specific reason why they should not be there). Marriage and Family Therapists treat issues that pertain to relationships and so are highly appropriate for working with children. Was your omission of our profession pure sloppyness on your part, or do you have some issue with MFTs? In which case, please disclose your biases.

Thank you, Dr. Iannelli.

The situation is now very difficult and many people do not really know what to do, but now we must get down to analyze each of us and see if we can get ahead, as everything depends on oneself, there are ups and downs but the important thing is that while there is life there is hope, a few days ago I read in findrxonline that antidepressants are the most common pills used in these cases but not many of them know the consequences …

Hello there, just become alert to your weblog through Google, and found that it’s really informative. I am going to be careful for brussels. I will appreciate when you continue this in future. Lots of other folks might be benefited out of your writing. Cheers!
