Crib Recall

By , About.com GuideJune 25, 2008

Follow me on:

Photo courtesy of the CDCThe U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Jardine Enterprises has announced the recall of about 320,000 baby cribs because "the wooden crib slats and spindles can break, creating a gap, which can pose an entrapment and strangulation hazard to infants."

Twenty-eight models of Jardine wooden cribs (only one of which is pictured here) are included in this baby crib recall that has affected 42 cribs, entrapping four infants and leading to mild injuries in two of them. Made in China and Vietnam, the Jardine cribs were sold at babiesrus.com and KidsWorld, Geoffrey Stores, Toys “R” Us, and Babies “R” Us stores from January 2002 through May 2008.

If you have one of these cribs, you should stop using it and should contact Jardine for information on how to receive a full credit toward purchase of a new crib.

Scary stuff, but it isn’t clear how a child could break the wood – presumably the slats disassemble?

According to the CPSC, “There have been 42 incidents of crib slats and spindles breaking. Four children became entrapped in the space created by a broken slat or spindle.”

I don’t think that it is necessarily the babies that are breaking the slats or spindles, just that they are breaking in regular day to day use and that leaves an extra space for the infant to get through the remaining slats and get entrapped.

Jardine requires you to take apart your crib, send them the hardware, and then they will send you a voucher towards a new crib. My question is – what is my baby supposed to sleep in until I’m finally able to get this new crib? I have to deal with 2 or more weeks of restless nights as my baby (18 months old) won’t sleep in a pack n play? This is ridiculous – it’s their error, they need to send me the voucher now and I’ll send them whatever they need after my baby is set up in a new crib! Why on earth should I have to go 2 or more weeks with no crib because of their error? Anyone else as baffled as I am over this?

I called 3 weeks ago to have the “kit” to send the hardware back to them to receive the voucher. I still have not received it. My understanding is your child is not suppose to sleep in the crib. So…not only do I have to wait until the voucher gets returned to me but I have waidted 3 weeks on top of that. Another annoyance is that my son is 2 1/2 and really doesn’t need a crib so I now have to buy a crib for the purpose of converting it. I would prefer to buy a childs bed but that is not an option. It is all quite annoying.
