Crib Recall

By , About.com GuideSeptember 22, 2007

Follow me on:

A crib with an incorrectly installed drop side.About one million cribs have been recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) because the "drop-side can detach from the crib," and that can "create a dangerous gap and lead to the entrapment and suffocation of infants."

The recalled cribs were made by Simplicity Inc. and were sold from January 1998 through May 2007 and include the Simplicity Aspen 3 in 1, Aspen 4 in 1, Nursery in a Box, Crib N Changer Combo, Pooh 4 in 1, and Chelsea. Also included in the recall are several cribs sold with a Graco logo, including the Aspen 3 in 1, Ultra 3 in 1, Ultra 4 in 1, Ultra 5 in 1, Trio, and Whitney.

Unfortunately, there have been several deaths and many more injuries because of this crib hazard. Specifically, because of the way the cribs are designed, some parents are installing the drop-side upside down (like the one in this image), causing it to eventually come off.

If you have a Simplicity or Graco crib, review the CPSC recall alert to see if you have one of the recalled cribs and to learn what you should do about it, which can include a free repair.

Even if you don't have one of these cribs, it is an important reminder to make sure that your baby's products, including her crib, car seat, swing, etc., are assembled and installed correctly.

This recall is a joke. Simplicity is out of business and Wal-Mart is giving me the run around. There is little communication from either party. If you get the recall to work, let me know how.

Called Wal-Mart in a new state to make sure it was worth bringing it in. No questions asked, I got the whole amount originally spent on a giftcard and used that to order a better crib online. This is definitely worth checking into!

We have had a problem since We got this crib. It never worked properly! Walmart said That WE were doing something wrong! Now We are getting a run around since The Major Recall was announced this week! Walmart said it is ok to continue to face crib backwards against wall with ducktape on it!? And We are to call Them if They don’t get back in touch with Us. They have to have time to figure what to do. WTF!?

This recall is a failure. I bought the crib from Wal-Mart in San Bernardino County and I am getting the running around. I am out $300 for a crib that is unsafe. I called the hot line, and I was told by the employee, they do not have any jurisdiction over getting a refund or an exchange of my crib. The employee from the government agency told me to throw the crib away. It is throw the crib away I am out $300, and someone who goes into my trash will take it out and use it for their baby.

There is a device that can eliminate the problem with the Simplicity Cribs. I cannot help you with anything except this. I found a way to fix one because I bought one for my grandson. It can be fixed for less than twenty dollars. A small price to pay to be sure a chile is safe. With this device, you can still utilize the drop down without fear of it collapsing.

if you have a recall item especially a baby item and take the recall print out of your baby item with you to Wal- Mart, Target, K-Mart, you should be refunded, some ‘wal- Marts will give cash, and some will give Store credittarget will give store credit. K- Mart will exchange your iten if it is in stock, or give store credit.

I have a cot that my nana bought me second hand when i was a baby this was just over 26 years ago, it is a beautiful chrome steel cot that has been in my family my whole life. It is made by Arrue, I have been trying to find some information about this cot as i want to use it for my baby that is due in feb 2012, it has been used for me and my 3 siblings, number of cousins and then it has been used for 6 out of 10 grandchildren that me and my 3 sibling share. Not once have we had a problem with the cot it has been fine for all of us about (16 children including myself) have all lived to tell the tail that they slept in the cot my nana bought me. My problem i have is that it is chrome steel and after 26 years there is 1 single bar missing from it. It is also drop sided (on one side) which is where the bar is missing. it is a beautiful vintage/antique cot (if you can call it either of them) and i’d love to use it. but before i do i would want to get the bar replaced. I have searched and searched the internet and arrue web page looking for this cot/crib and have no luck. we buy new mattress everytime its used and i feel that since we have all lived no harm can be done using it again on my 3rd child. I REALLY NEED HELP! If anyone has any information on this cot please please get in touch! I want to keep it in the family

I am having the same problem. I called Walmart today where the product was purchased a little over 3 years ago and they refuse to give me a refund because the recall should have been caught 3 years ago….So now what? I paid money for a crib I used not knowing it was recalled and now can’t sell it or use it for another child….I’m just out the money I spent since the manufacturer messed up? I think that is crap and something needs to be done about this especially since I never even knew there was a recall on the thing. Good thing nothing happened to my son while using this product. This is very disappointing to me, and customer service somewhere should help people who have purchased these products!
