Flu Season Update

Sunday February 25, 2007
Each flu season seems to have some kind of surprise in store for parents and pediatricians.

A few years ago, it was the flu shot shortages, and this year, it was the delay in getting flu shots to kids. Will there be a surprise next year? Maybe, and it might be a new recommendation that all kids should get a flu shot, even those over age five.

This year, it shouldn't be a surpise that flu activity continues to increase, as we are right in the middle of a typical flu season. The CDC now reports widespread flu cases in twenty four states. And this year's flu season is following the same pattern as the last few years, when we had a peak in late February or early March.

Knowing where there is flu activity can be helpful, because if you have classic flu symptoms in an area where there are a lot of flu infections, especially widespread flu infections, then you likely have the flu and should see your doctor right away to see if you are a candidate for one of the flu medications, such as Tamiflu or Relenza.

for the flu shot you should be able to get it whenever you feel the need to have one. it doesnt matter if your over the age of five and you should have to wait til next year to get one. if you know you have the flu and want to get rid of it as soon as possible then do it. why should the sick people have to wait til next year? when next year comes around the people who were sick will be dead. thats not fair at all. thank you
