Benadryl when Flying with Kids

Saturday April 29, 2006
Can I give my kids Benadryl to help them sleep when we fly? We are planning a cross-country airplane trip this summer and I am worried that my kids might not do well on the plane.

“The risks usually don’t outweigh the benefits.”

You meant that the other way around.

Yes, thanks. Spell check doesn’t catch everything. ;->

I heard the following conversation at SFO, waiting with a bunch of teenage kids and their parents going to Europe.

“Honey, did you take your sleeping pill?”

“Mom…I just took a No-Doze!”

“But Honey, you want to sleep though the flight!”

“But mom, it’s just morning!”

One of them sat behind me and kicked the back of my seat all the way to New York. She was very nice. Every time I turned around to stare at her she said, “sorry” and went right back to kicking.

I dunno, over the counter or not, we’re a drug culture. Many folks seem to need a pill to adjust every little mood they think they’re having. TV commercials urging viewers to badger their doctors for the latest, greatest, side-effect laden purple pill help a lot.

I have travelled for 10 years with my two sons now aged 10, 8. I drug them every time we fly back to the States (25 hour trip usually). The boys are very cooperative and appreciate the sleep they get. It helps keep them from becoming exhausted. Benadryl has worked well for us in this respect. You have to try it before the flight though because there is a percentage of kids who have a hyperactive reaction to Benadryl
